Hernando de Soto
Hernando De Soto claimed nothing. He was the first European to see the Mississippi river.
The Mississippi is the closest of the three, flowing to the Gulf of Mexico between northern Louisiana and Mississippi, and through central Louisiana in its lowest course. The Rio Grande flows between Texas and Mexico along the southwest and southern U.S. border, to the west of Louisiana. The Columbia River flows out to sea at Astoria, Oregon, before which it forms the border between Oregon and Washington State. So, the Mississippi River is closest to Florida, the Rio Grande is farther away, and the Columbia is diagonally across the country in the far NW corner.
De Soto found the Southeastern section of the United States and was the first European to reach the Mississippi River. He didn't look for a fountain of youth and was looking for gold. He was a rival of Columbus.
Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto was the first European to discover the river in 1541.
