Trajan (18 September 53 AD - 9 August 117 AD) born in Hispania Baetica modern day Spain, reigned as "Emperor Nerva, Trajan, Caesar, Augustus, son of the divine Nerva" until his death.

A popular Emperor, he invested heavily in public works and buildings and implemented welfare systems for the military.

On his return to Rome in 117A.D. by ship he suddenly died of a stroke in the city of Selinus. His body was returned to Rome where he was deified and declared 'Optimus princeps' or in English the 'best Emperor' for his military conquests. He was the second Emperor given this title of five honoured in this way.

His body was cremated and his ashes rest under "Trajan's column" in Rome.
