The First slaves were the African Americans.

The first slaves in the new world were actually the native peoples of the colonized area. When the Europeans arrived in the late 15th century, the native population was considered to be less than human and therefore to be used however the 'superior' colonists needed. However, the Europeans also brought diseases that were to prove disasterously virulent among the natives who had no natural immunity. As the native population began dieing of the illnesses brought from Europe and attempting to fight or escape the ever increasing number of intruders, the Portuguese and Spanish began importing black Africans to do the work that the Indians had been forced to do. Slavery had been going on throughout the known world for as long as people had been in existence, conquerors subjugating the conquered, so it was a normal progression to transport it to the new world when the native people no longer could or would surrender to the invading Europeans.
