Charles Edward Stuart better known as 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' and/or 'The Young Pretender'. None of 'Charlie's' senior officers believed that the ground at Culloden could be defended. Charles would not listen to them, he thought he knew better. The result ? Defeat for Charles's army.

The Jacobites fought the Government troops at Culloden sometimes known as the Hanoverians after the name of the ruling Royal family. The Jacobites were led by "Bonnie" Prince Charlie and the British Government troops by the Duke of Cumberland (the King's younger son). They were actually cousins! On the Jacobite side were Highlanders, Lowlanders and regular French units (Royal Ecossais and Irish Piquets) the only large English unit (Manchester Regiment) had been left to garrison Carlisle. The Government forces had Highland, Lowland, English and a small contingent of Hessian cavalry (Germans).

The Jacobite rebellion lasted from 1688-1746. The three heads were the deposed James VII of Scotland and II of England and his son James Edward Stuart (the Old Pretender) and grandson Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie - the Young Pretender). In addition given theses were exiled abroad for much of their life the leader in Scotland during the 1715 rebellion under James was John Erskine 6th Earl of Mar. During the 1745 rebellion Lord George Murray (the Duke of Atholl's son) was the senior commander under Charles apart from a brief period when the Duke of Perth commanded.
