Simon Bolivar
On September 7, 1821 the Gran Colombia (a nation covering much of modern Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, and Ecuador) was created, with Bolívar as president and Francisco de Paula Santander as vice president
He lead the country of Gran Colombia to independance. This country consisted of modern day Equador, Colombia, Venesuela, and Panama.
Panama was territory of Spain until November 28, 1821, then it joined the country of Gran Colombia, which was compromised of the modern countries of Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, and of of course Panama. Panama became independent from Gran Colombia on November 3, 1903 and is currently an independent Republic.
Colombia, on its creation in 1819 Actually, it was Gran Colombia when it was established in 1819 largely through the efforts of Simon Bolivar. This republic, replacing the Spanish Colony of New Granada, included the present day Colombia, along with what eventually became separate nations like Venezuela, where Gran Colombia's capitol, Cuidad Bolivar, was located. Gran Colombia was fragmented in 1830. Bolivar's attempts to establish a united states of South America came to an end because of the rounds of endless civil wars between liberals and conservatives which, in various forms, continues today. Bolivia, of course, was named after Bolivar.
The president of Colombia is referred to simply as "the President of Colombia." As of my last knowledge update in October 2023, the current president is Gustavo Petro, who took office on August 7, 2022. The title reflects the head of state and government in the country.
