The last person to be burned at the stake in Europe was a woman named Anna Göldi, who was executed in Switzerland in 1782. Her case is often cited as a significant moment in the decline of witch trials and the shift towards more rational legal practices.
During the 100 Years' War, Joan of Arc was a huge morale booster for the French troops. With the French on the verge of falling to the English, she traveled with the French soldiers, giving them something to fight for in a sense. She did not actually fight, however.

Joan of Arc was important because her actions resulted in the crowing of Charles VII as King of France, as well as galvanizing the French people into renewed efforts to drive out the English. Joan of Arc is now recognized as a national heroine in France. She is an important religious figure, whose faith in God led her to risk her life and safety as a woman to try and save her country. Her faith never faltered, even as she was being burned at the stake (she reportedly screamed Jesus' name as she was burned). She was made a saint for her faith and her actions.
