Sir Michael O'Dwyer, the Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab at the time of the massacre, was shot dead by Shaheed Udham Singh on 13th March 1940, 21 years after the event. It is said that he (O'Dwyer) ordered the massacre and fully supported it in his memoirs.
