Joseph Banks was one of the botanists on James Cook's ship, along with Finnish botanist Daniel Solander. There was at least one cabin boy, Isaac Smith, who became the first known European to step foot on the soil of "New South Wales". There was also a ship's surgeon and his son named Nicholas, who was the first of the crew to sight the islands of New Zealand.
