Depends on your history. Today they help many people and save lives but their past is more controversial. They arrived in Canada in the early 1600's and while they had some early success they also had some setbacks. If you are Catholic or consider what the other options, what other paths history may have taken, you are likely to consider them heroes. If you are not Catholic, or do not agree with the spread of Christianity into North America, then they would be villains.
