The US got Hawaii from the government of the Republic of Hawaii. Members of what was called the Committee of Safety overthrew Queen Liliʻuokalani in In January 1893, and formed a Provisional Government for what ultimately became a new Republic of Hawaii. The government of the Republic of Hawaii and the government of the United States agreed that the US annex Hawaii in 1898. There is a link below.
