The first ever American to go into outer space was astronaut John Glenn, who orbited the Earth aboard the capsule Friendship 7 on 20th February 1962, at the age of 41 years old.

He went up again aboard the space shuttle Discovery on 29th October 1998, becoming the oldest person to fly in space at the age of 77! He has also served as a prominent US Senator for the Republican Party, and is 91 years old as of February 2013.
