This is an interesting question, but it has no universally accepted answer.

Of course a lot of people will say Columbus was first to discover America in 1492.

I know there are a few who believe the first might have been Henry I Sinclair, the Earl of Orkney, in about 1400.

Other people will say Lief Ericson was first European to visit America, sometime around 1000.

Some people believe Saint Brendan discovered America in the 6th century.

Barry Fell, who was a professor at Harvard, believed there was a long standing transatlantic trade going on that included the ancient Carthaginians, Phoenicians, and Egyptians.
