The city of Bordeaux
Charlemagne was a Frank. The Franks were a German tribe which crossed in Rhine early in the 5th Century and formed a kingdom within the Western Roman Empire, in present day France and northern Spain. The country of France is named after them.
Twenty-six years later, in 405, the Ostrogoths led by Radagaisus attempted to invade Italy, but they were repelled. The Vandals, Sueves, Aliens (who were Iranian-speakers) and probably the Burgundians crossed the frozen river Rhine and entered Gaul in 406, beginning their invasion of the western part of the Roman Empire.
The Rhine is a wide, fast-flowing river. It is close to Germany's western borders (and forms part of the German border with France). Crossing the Rhine was essential in order to advance into the heartland of Germany. On 7 March 1945 American forces crossed the Rhine at Remagen and within six weeks they took the Ruhr, which was Germany's key industrial area.
There were two groups of Franks: the Ripuarian Franks who lived around the area of present day Frankfurt and the Salian Franks, who lived at the mouth of the river Rhine. The former carried out many raids into northern Gaul, devastating its economy. However, like all the peoples who lived on or near the frontier of the Roman Empire, they also traded with he Romans and become romanised to some extent. The latter were allowed to settle in Toxandria, an area of the Roman Empire south of the river Rhine and in northern Belgium, became Roman allies and fought alongside them and provided mercenaries to the Romans. Therefore, they became thoroughly romanised.
The Vandals, Sueves and Alans crossed the frozen river Rhine in 406 and invaded Gaul. The Alans were not Germanic. They were Iranian speakers. The situation with the Burgundians is less clear. It seems likely that some of them were part of the invasion of 406. However, the Burgundian king Gundahar settled his people across the Rhine in 411/12 after he had Jovinus, proclaimed as a puppet emperor in Gaul. They were granted land in the Worms, Spyers-Strasbourg area as allies. The Alemanni took advantage of the invasions to take over Switzerland and Alsace (in north-eastern France).
the Rhine River! By the way, you answered my question by saying it backwards! So to repay you, i gave you the answer! :) LOL!

The Franks were originally a confederation of Germanic tribes east of the Rhine that from AD 257.
The Franks are a Germanic tribe that migrated from their homeland east of the Rhine in the 6th century to modern day Gaul. The Franks were Germanic and do not confuse them with French. Many say that Charlemagne was a French emperor but that is not the truth. The ancestor of the French are peasants and not the ruling Franks and the later French kings/nobles have almost no Frankish ancestry, if not none.
they were a group of people who settled in Europe and started expanding and trading with neighbors. they were also hit by the black death
The Franks conquered France, southern Germany, Switzerland and Austria. It cannot be said that they conquered r Holland south of the river Rhine and Belgium because they had been allowed to settle there by the Romans.Several centurieslater the Pope agreed to give Charlemagne of the Franks Italy if he chased out the Lombards from there.
