In pure military assessments of the Battle of Antietam, military historians see the battle as being one of inconclusive results. When military experts sweep away all the political ramifications of that battle, they see an inept and numerically superior Union army, Yes, Lee had to retreat, in fact no matter what happened in Sharpsburg, Lee did not have enough men or supplies to stay in Maryland. Military minded people say that Lee's other objectives were met, thereby, in a sense, nullify the results at Antietam. Militarists point out that Lee's invasion prevented a combined effort by McClellan and General John Pope to advance on Richmond. Lee's positions before and after Antietam transferred all military operations to northern Virginia. Based on Southern newspapers, the Southern public was not discouraged by the setback in Maryland. Also, the Army of Northern Virginia remained a force that within seven weeks doubled its size. With all the above said, Antietam was a political victory for Lincoln and the Union. Lincoln was then resolved to release his first emancipation proclamation.

Southern military leaders weren't allowed to hold office during reconstruction.
It was definitely a military failure and this of cause means it was also a political failure (for the Americans).
It was a southern advantage.
Republicans gained control of southern state governments during Reconstruction primarily through the support of newly enfranchised African American voters and the assistance of Northern abolitionists and carpetbaggers. The federal government also played a crucial role by implementing military Reconstruction Acts, which divided the South into military districts and required states to create new constitutions guaranteeing voting rights for Black men. This political shift was met with resistance from Southern Democrats, leading to significant social and political tensions in the region.
Commander of the Army of Northern Virginia Robert E. Lee was placed in overall southern command only in the last months of the war.

Southern congressmen were able to secure several military bases in the South due to a combination of strategic geographic considerations, political influence, and the historical presence of military installations in the region. The South's location made it a key area for defense and training purposes, especially during the Cold War. Additionally, the political clout of Southern legislators enabled them to advocate effectively for military funding and infrastructure, ensuring that bases were established and maintained in their states. This was often bolstered by the region's economic reliance on military spending, which further solidified the presence of these bases.
Within the large parameters of the Confederate military, there were any number of names given to large armies in the US Civil War. For example, two large Southern armies were the Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of Tennessee.
The US Civil War was about many things. The politicians of the Northern states and the Southern states disagreed on issues such as slavery, tariffs, treaties, etc. The Southern states decided they could no longer work with the Northern states, and announced they were leaving the Union. The Northern states told them they could not leave (Secede). The Southern states decided to kick the Union military out of the South, and attacked Ft. Sumter in South Carolina. Game on.
