They were like the WWII version of suicide bombers. The Japanese had (not sure if they still have or not) strict codes of honour. They would rather die than surrender or be taken hostage. So, in the war of the Pacific, when Japan was facing defeat they thought this was an effective way of reversing their fortunes. They would fly their planes, full of explosives, into American ships (especially aircraft carriers), killing as many people as they could. Initially it proved effective but once the Americans found a way of countering these attacks by mounting massive anti-aircraft barrages which often brought down the Japanese planes before they hit their targets.

The Word Kamikaze means "divine wind" referring to a great storm which destroyed the invasion fleet of the Chinese sometime in the middle ages.
