During the war of 1812, after the defeat of the British Empire, the American militia began to take increasingly desperate measures to drive the remaining British forces from the occupied American soil.

One such measure was the idea of strapping flares to the backs of sedated hawks, to be used as signals for troop movement and enemy locations.

While succeeding at first, eventually every hawk that was used in this way died, and the experiment was shut down after a more advanced form of communication was introduced.
