Wiley College is a four-year, private, historically black, liberal arts college located on the west side of Marshall, Texas. Founded in 1873 by the Methodist Episcopal Church's Bishop Isaac Wiley and certified in 1882 by the Freedman's Aid Society, it is notable as one of the oldest predominantly black colleges west of the Mississippi River.[1][2]
In an impactful speech, Tolson explains that while the goal of slavery was to, “Keep the slave physically strong, but psychologically weak and dependent on the slave master” and to “keep the body, take the mind,” he and the other professors of Wiley College are here to help the students “to find, take back, and keep [their] righteous mind[s] because obviously, [they] have lost it” (The Great Debaters, 2007).
