After his subjugation of the southeast of England, the Roman supreme commander Aulus Plautius sent Vespasian and his Legio II Augusta to conquer the southwest and subjugate the hostile Durotriges and Dumnonii. He captured twenty oppidia, fortified towns or hill forts, including Maiden Castle. There is no record of a battle being fought there. It is likely that Vespasian besieged and seized Maiden Castle.

Maiden Castle is a major defensive earthwork in Dorset, England. Started around 3,000BC during the Bronze Age, it was further developed during the Iron Age and was a huge hill fort with massive defensive ramparts and ditches, it probably saw many battles over the centuries it was in occupation.

When the Romans invaded Britain in 43AD, Maiden Castle was the principal fortification of the Durotriges tribe who were mainly farmers. The 2nd Augusta Legion under its Commander Vespasian was charged with the task of subduing Dorset and incorporating it into the Roman Empire. The battle to subdue the Durotriges took place around Maiden Castle and the Britons were easily overcome by the superior forces of the Romans. The Romans later built a temple on the site.
