The march to the Sea was not a battle, it was a campaign. Sherman laid waste to a wide swath of land in two columns between Atlanta and Savannah. They were able to live off the land without relying on a supply train. On the march, they destroyed anything that might be beneficial to the southern war effort and their entire infrastructure: telegraph lines, railroad tracks, bridges, warehouses, factories, what crops and livestock they didn't eat. They also requisitioned horses, mules and any animals that might be useful to the northern war effort. The purpose of the Total War effort was to prevent supplies from reaching Lee's army and terrorize the civilian population into suing for peace.
