Following the Spanish-American War, the US acquired the Philippine Islands as part of the terms of the treaty ending the war. During the war, the Philippine people assumed that they would receive their independence from Spain following the war. When the US decided to retain possession of the Islands, a group of Filipinos, led by Emilo Aguinaldo, withdrew from the Island's major cities and began an insurrection against the US. The US eventually had to send an army of occupation consisting of 65,000 men by early 1900 to put down the insurrection. The army never did defeat the Filipinos, but the rebellion ended when General Arthur MacArthur succeeded in capturing Aguinaldo. He took an oath of allegiance to the US and ordered his followers to do the same. The US occupied the Philippine Islands as a territory of the US until 1946 when independence was granted to the Islands.
