Men and women wore jewelry in medieval times. Jewelry was an indication of wealth, however, and as such it was doubtless covered by the sumptuary laws that existed in many places and prohibited people of certain classes from wearing or eating things associated with the nobility. Middle class people would have worn jewelry, but might not have been allowed the use of certain stones, metals, or settings. An obvious example is a crown, which was an indicator of noble rank, with different crowns associated with different ranks of nobility, from the simples, worn by barons, through more ornate, worn by counts and earls, to those worn by monarchs. Emperors had crowns that had features different from those of a king.
Simple jewelry, such as brooches used as clasps on clothing and buttons, which were initially only worn for decoration, would have been worn by anyone, though different classes would have had them of different manufacture. For example, if a serf showed up with a wooden clasp, no one would have cared, but if it had amber set in it, the serf might have been punished for acting above station. At least this is what happened in theory; sumptuary laws were notorious for being left unenforced.
Rings, necklaces, bracelets, and brooches from medieval times are still in use today. Generally the high level people used to wear antique and royal medieval jewelry.
