Two major earthquakes (one in 363 AD and the other in 551 AD)


Petra declined under Roman rule as the sea-trade routes changed and trade traffic through Nabataea decreased. In 363 an earthquake destroyed many buildings, and crippled the water supply system. There was another major earthquake in 551. The last inhabitants left the city in 663 when the Arabs conquered the area.
