It could be due to the fact that the clothing was made out of flax, which was soaked, separated, beaten, woven, washed, rinsed, pounded and bleached in the sun, resulting in a white colour. There were no clothing dyes in those times, besides natural colourants, so the Egyptians had no way of dying clothing. White was also considered to be a 'pure' colour. The hot weather meant that clothing had to reflect heat, rather than absorb it, so white was chosen for this reason.

"Popular" is not the right word to use, since most ancient Egyptians did not choose the colour of their clothing. The most widespread material was linen, which quickly bleaches to a white shade after repeated washing and exposure to hot sun - this was not a fashion statement, simply a fact of life. The the most common colour of clothes in ancient Egypt was white.
