Why is Buddha depicted as being fat?

It is unlikely that the historic Buddha was fat. There are no portraits from life to confirm that fact, but if we consider the arc of his life:His birth family was rich and he was trained to be a prince. This would include many skills like sword fighting, riding etc hat would promote fitness rather than fatness. When he left his father's house he embarked on a path of asceticism subsisting on a minimum of food and comfort. This would rended him rail thin sothat all his ribs would be visible. When he became enlightened he determined that a life of moderation was the middle path. This would entail eating until you had "enough" not until you were full. Together with his life of wandering about the countryside would promote fitness not fatness again. The common perception that thee Buddha was fat probably arise from the figure of "Hotei" (the fat Buddha, or "Laughing Chinaman" statue in Chinese restaurants). He is a symbol of happiness and prosperity, and in many countries a prosperous person is shown as being portly.Alternately the Hollywood image of Buddha, Buddhists and Buddhist is generally (at least) chubby.

Who are some significant leaders of Buddhism?

The original Buddha was a real living person, and credited for either founding the ideals, or rediscovering the teachings. Hotei was a Chinese, Buddhist monk often confused for the Buddha, and is the man whose image is used for the fat and happy 'Buddha' statues.

What makes the buddah look wise?

The fact that buddha is fat. Which is funny cause buddha originally was so thin you could see the bones pressing against skin, no muscle or fat covering. This was from fasting Answer: Nobody "looks wise".A person can look angry, happy, tense, worried and so on by the positioning of their eyes, lips, eyebrow and so on - these are expressions. We'e all trained to identify these looks. In the case of the Buddha, you are looking at a statue which is an artistic representation of haw a person might have looked - but nobody knows. Artists are trianed to create representations that look like people including the expressions thy might have worn - statues of generals look fierce, statues of Roman emperors look self assured, statues of saints often look pained (depending on whether they are in the process of dying). As far as the Buddha's statues he could best be described as looking serene (untroubled). Some Buddha statues like Hotei, the fat Buddha in Chinese restaurants, look happy. In today's world people who look serene are often thought to be intelligent since they "know the truth about life". They could just as easily be numb from drugs or alcohol.

A Buddha with both of its hands in the air means?

This is an image of the Matreya Buddha or Buddha to be. He is due in about 2500 years. His last known birth was in China as the wandering fat monk with the beads and the bag seen is lots of seated Buddha statues. As the energy of the Sakaymuni Buddha is dieing out now we are starting to see that of the Matreya Buddha come in. With the wealth coming from the heavens rather than the earth. Who are some famous Buddhas?

There are lot of different versions of the Buddha that are Buddha's to come, those are called bodishaphas (not sure if I spelled that right so don't quote me on that). The only one I really know about is the happy Buddha, but the Happy Buddha is a fat man with long ears. This is not always the case but in the statue I have, he is sitting with one ha on his knee the other held aloft. He is definitely one of the more famous Buddhas (besides Siddhartha Gotamma).

Why sumo fighters are fat its there a relation between them and how Buddha looks?

Japanese sumo wrestles attain great weight to make themselves difficult to toss around. However there is a lot of muscle, not fat involved. The weight gain is achieved through a high protein diet and exercise. Buddha (the Indian philosopher) advocated a middle way in your approach to life, part of this is to eat until you are no longer hungry - not until you are full. Combining this with a vegetarian diet and a lifestyle which involved walking about giving his discussions or sermons, it is likely that he was fit and slender not fat. As far as the non-Buddhist view that Buddha was fat, this is probably due to the fact that most people's only contact with Buddha images is Hotei, the fat laughing oriental figure often seen in restaurants, or the fat Buddha seen in Hollywood movies.
