We can't find reference of a trail blazed by Marcus Whitman and his wife in 1836. However, in 1843, Whitman helped lead the first large wagon train group west. The trek was called the Great Emigration and was the beginning of the creation of the Oregon Trail.

Eliza Hart Spalding was a missionary in the West with her husband, Henry Spalding. Together, they traveled the Oregon Trail with Marcus and Narcissa Whitman. This group were the some of the earliest Americans to cross the Rocky mountains and the Western plains. Narcissa and Eliza actually were the first white women to cross the Rocky Mountains. Their mission place was in Nez Perce country, Lapwai Creek.

The purpose of the Whitman mission was to teach the Indians of Christianity. However, as the mission continued the people in the mission ytied to change the Native American's cultures as well. Also, the Whitman mission was also a important stop for the emigrants that weas coming into the west.
