he surrendered at Yorktown because the Frenh Navy had cut off his escape at sea and he was still waiting for new reinforcements from New York. The British gave up in the end because although they had won many significant victories, they still could not strike a decisive enough blow to kill off the American cause. Also with the French, Spanish, and Dutch entries into the war, the war had become unwinnable for Britain, and they risked a French/Spanish invasion of England if they tried to carry on.
