In 1926 the Guomindang (GMD) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) worked together against the 'warlords.' These warlords controlled their own sections of the country and used a lot of military tactics to keep it that way. Thus the northern expedition begun, a campaign to get rid of the warlords for good. However the GMD and CCP didn't always get along, in 1927 the GMD purged itself of the Communists and people suspected of being Communist in Shanghai because the people began to support the CCP more then the GMD. This event is considered the peak of tensions between the two parties causing civil war afterwards.
