Cortes did not want any possible chance of retreat in ship from his soldiers
because they need to go and destroy all the ships before the other people steel it
by ship i think 8) Frist of all his name was Hernan Cortes, the only option to cross the Atlanic Ocean in that point in time was through ship. The trip took a few months since the ships did not have engines.
There is no record of such a quotation, but the idea of burning ships seems to have originated with the Greeks in the 4th or 5th century BC. * Hernan Cortes, sailing into Yucatan (Mexico) to conquer the Aztecs in 1519, ordered all but one of his ships scuttled so that none of his force could retreat back to Cuba. (The remaining ship sailed back to Spain with gold, and to bring word of his intentions.) For any of several reasons, the act has been erroneously perpetuated as "burning" the ships.
His name is Montezumea, and Cortes defeated Montezuma because Montezuma thought he was a god returning from exile. Montezuma welcomed Cortes, and in turn Cortes waged war and eventuslly killed Montezuma after getting all the gold he wanted.
Cortes and his 500 soldiers were stationed in Vera Cruz, he wanted to march forward towards Tenochtitlan. But there was a part of his force that thought the idea was suicide and preferred to return to their base in Cuba and return with more men. Rumors started of a possible mutiny, and of soldiers sneaking off with ships. Cortes could not afford to lose any of his men or ships. So the idea came about to sink 10 of the 11 ships. He did this with a few men in secret, at first he claimed the first 4 or 5 boats sank naturally. But when the other boats sank the men became furious, blaming Cortes for certain death in Mexico. Cortes laid out one of his famous speeches at this point. Telling the men that what awaits them in Tenochtitlan are riches, and that to embark on such a perilous journey with one eye always looking back at the ships would doom it to failure. He said for all you who are truly afraid there is still one boat left. We will provision it and allow anyone to return to Cuba who desires to do so. When we return from Mexico with riches we will fill you in on the stories of adventure and glory... After this speech, not one man left. Although he sank the boats, he was wise enough to save the sails and ropes. These were later critical for use on the brigatines that he ordered built for the final siege of Tenochtitlan.

Cortes
He destroyed it because he wanted to make a new community with all Christians
Hernan Cortes ordered his men to burn all but one of their ships. Cortes reasoned that by eliminating their only method of retreat, his men had no choice but to fight hard to win against the Aztecs, which they ultimately did (Global Business Today (2010)).
They said that they would destroy all ships going into Great Britain.

Yes they did because they thought they would destroy all of the Navy's war ships and didn't realize the best ships were out to sea.
