France and Spain were at that time traditional enemies of and territorial competitors to England, so they naturally supported the rebellious Americans against England. It was probably a factor as well that France and Spain were still Roman Catholic while England had broken ties with Rome two centuries prior, and both France and Spain had suffered many defeats at the hands of the English.
