Otto of Greece was a Bavarian prince who became the first modern King of Greece in 1832 under the Convention of London after southern Greece was liberated from foreign occupation. Otto was a descendant of the Greek Imperial dynasties of Komnenos and Laskaris who fled Greece upon the dissolution of the Byzantine Empire and the subsequent Ottoman invasion. After Greece liberated itself from the Ottoman occupation it was in political turmoil. King Otto was to bring some stability to Greece as it came together again as a nation.
