Wendell Phillips was successful in promoting reform and drawing attention to his causes. His speeches drew large crowds and he gained many followers. Philip's is known as one of the best orators for the abolitionists in his time. His work in pomoting and becoming an advocate for slaves, woman, native Americans and his work towards promoting temperance thrust him into the position of being a leading reformer. Phillips left his audiences with many rhetorical and memorable qoutations that are still used today. Phillips overall can be characterized as an activist and expansionist in his view of human rights. He used aggressive tactics to publicize his message; he welcomed debates and openly criticized anything he believed to be immoral and wrong. Phillips also was an active member of the Anti-Slavery Society and became the President of the society in 1865.
