In 1844, Araminta Ross (who took the name Harriet) had married a free black man, John Tubman. After several failed attempts to win her freedom, she escaped Maryland with her two brothers in September, 1849. Unfortunately, the brothers soon returned to their owners because of family concerns, and she was again under her original owner. She then escaped on her own later that year, but secretly returned again to Maryland several times to help her family and others to escape.
