The reasons are many, but the deep mistrust of the Army led to Hitler forming his own bodyguard. As the war progressed and events turned further against Germany, Hitler continued to expand the SS. They eventually became his fire brigade or firemen. They were the trouble shooters, whenever a crisis developed Hitler would dispatch his SS. Due to the fact of Hitler's devotion to the SS, they were lavishly equipped with the newest equipment and allowed to keep their manpower requirements closer to the established levels than other units. Himmler used this fear of Hitler's to expand his own empire within the 3rd Reich. And as the Final Solution was developed and implemented, Hitler turned this over to Himmler and the SS to minister.
