Why did Hitler attack England during the battle of Britain?

The German Luftwaffe (airforce) tried in vain to bomb Great Britain into submission. Germany however failed thanks to the Royal Air Force thus resulting in a devastating blow to Germany, one it never recovered.

If Hitler did not attack Britain after conquering the majority of Europe, he would have constantly faced the problem of a British attempt to regain lost ground. Also, over the course of many centuries, Britain had proved to be an unconquerable island nation, so if Hitler wanted to succeed in Europe, he must first take out the impregnable Britain.

He hoped a bombing campaign would knock England out of the war without the need to invade: that the threat of invasion of invasion would cause Britain to sue for peace. He did not reckon on the RAF radar and fighter squadrons to thwart The Blitz.
