Fredrick Douglass told Lincoln that he wanted blacks to fight in the war, so after a few months or so, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Prolocomation to let blacks fight in the war.

To save the Union - and the cotton revenues. It did not start as an abolitionist war. Lincoln turned it into one by issuing the Emancipation, effective from January 1863, and even then the Northern public was not generally Abolitionist.
