The route to the East had long been cut out by the Turkish Empire, and Columbus, knowing at the time that the Earth was round - thanks to earlier thinkers like Eratosthenes and Ptolemy - knew that he could reach the Indies if instead he traveled far enough west. But Columbus didn't know that North and South America was in the way. He underestimated the size of the Earth and (re)discovered America. Plus both Columbus and his Spanish financial backers, King Ferdinand II of Aragón & Queen Isabella I of Castile, were staunch Roman Catholics, and saw the voyage as an opportunity to spread, what they considered to be, the words of the almighty.

They are both explorers and they both explored the New World, and sailed for Spain.
Various European explorers and nations established claims in the New World during the Age of Exploration. Christopher Columbus, sailing for Spain, is often credited with claiming parts of the Caribbean for Spain in 1492. Following him, explorers like Hernán Cortés and Francisco Pizarro claimed large territories in the Americas for Spain, while other nations, such as France and England, also established their own claims through explorers like Jacques Cartier and John Cabot. These claims often led to colonization and significant geopolitical changes in the region.
