Thomas Brown was a successful planter and magistrate from a wealthy British family who arrived in Georgia shortly before the Revolutionary War. A prosperous businessman, he opposed the growing public sentiment against colonial trade with Great Britain. As a result, he was attacked and seriously injured by members of the Sons of Liberty. In response, he organized loyalist and Native American forces to support the British army. With his help, the British captured Charleston.

Captured once and exchanged, he and many of his followers were exiled from the US after the war.
