The Jefferson Administration wanted to purchase the port of New Orleans from Napoleon, not the area known as the Louisiana Territory. The port was necessary if the "western" states and territories would have a permanent port to ship their goods and products without fear of the French cutting off the "right of deposit" in New Orleans. When America offered to buy the port, Napoleon surprised Jefferson by offering the entire territory for a cost that came out to about 4 cents an acre. It doubled the size of the US and opened the western section of North America to expansion by the US. It also led to future conflicts with Great Britain regarding the Northwest Territory, as the purchase of Louisiana gave the US a claim to that area as well as the British claim.
President Thomas Jefferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the Louisiana Territory and seek a river route to the Pacific Ocean, which they accomplished from 1804 to 1806. Zebulon Pike, on the other hand, was tasked with exploring the southern portions of the Louisiana Territory and did not accompany Lewis and Clark. Pike's expeditions, which took place in the early 1800s, focused on the southern regions, including parts of present-day Colorado and New Mexico.
Jefferson was deeply concerned about the cession of the Louisiana Territory from Spain to France because he feared that a powerful French presence in North America could threaten U.S. expansion and security. He believed that France, under Napoleon, would seek to establish a vast empire that could hinder American trade and access to the Mississippi River, crucial for western farmers. Additionally, Jefferson worried that this shift could lead to the re-establishment of French colonial influence in the region, undermining the democratic ideals of the young nation. This concern ultimately motivated his push for the acquisition of New Orleans and the broader Louisiana Territory.
Germans began settling in Louisiana in the 18th century, primarily due to economic hardships and political unrest in Europe. Large groups, particularly from regions such as the Palatinate, migrated to escape poverty and seek better opportunities. The Spanish government, which controlled Louisiana at the time, encouraged German immigration to bolster the population and develop agriculture. Many settled along the banks of the Mississippi River, contributing to the region's cultural and economic landscape.

Ottoman taxes and restrictions on trade in its territory encouraged Europeans to seek new trade routes to Asia.
The Louisiana Purchase in 1805 from France basically doubled the size of the United States. A good part of the territory of Louisiana Purchase was west of the Mississippi River. It expanded the United States westward and thus created land for American settlers to seek new homes and opportunities westward.
