"Clickers" also called "Crickets" were used by Allied paratroopers to distinguish between friend and foe during the initial Airborne assault during the Invasion of Normandy. Clicking your cricket and receiving a returned click would signal friendly troops.
Trouble was the sound made by a clicker was similar to that made by a bolt action rifle being cocked. I think that only US paras used them bu I could be wrong!

This is a difficult question to answer as the term clickers is very vague. Their are several differnt types of clickers such as ones used as training aids for pets and ones used by teachers to automaticly change screens on a monitor screen.
