The coat of arms of India has four Indian lions standing on a circle. The idea was taken from the Sarnath Lion Capital that was built by an Indian emperor named Ashoka. He built it around 250 BCE using a single piece of polished sandstone.

The Ashoka Pillar at Sarnath was erected during the reign of Emperor Ashoka, which is generally dated to around 250 BCE. This pillar commemorates the Buddha's first sermon, delivered at Sarnath. It is one of several pillars built by Ashoka across his empire, featuring intricate carvings and the famous Lion Capital at its top.
Ashoka chose the lion as his emblem to symbolize strength, power, and authority. The Lion Capital of Ashoka, featuring four lions standing back-to-back, represents the ideals of courage and sovereignty, reflecting his commitment to leadership and protection of his empire. Additionally, the lion is associated with Buddhism, representing the Buddha as the "Lion of the Shakyas," signifying the spread of Buddhist values and principles throughout his reign.
Ashoka chose the lion as a symbol for his pillars to represent strength, power, and authority. The lion is also associated with the Buddha, as it symbolizes the Buddha's teachings spreading like a lion's roar. This emblem was meant to convey Ashoka's commitment to dharma (righteousness) and to reinforce his role as a benevolent ruler promoting peace and moral governance throughout his empire. The Lion Capital of Ashoka, which features four lions standing back to back, has since become a national emblem of India, symbolizing courage and pride.

The wheel in Ashoka's Lion Capital symbolizes the Dharmachakra, or Wheel of Law, representing Buddhism and the teachings of the Buddha. It signifies Ashoka's commitment to upholding these principles and promoting peace, harmony, and righteousness throughout his empire.

If you look at the Ashoka pillar at Sarnath (or a picture of it) you will find the capital of the pillar has 4 lions sitting back to back. The lion represents the attainment of Buddha-hood. The four lions surmounting the capital symbolize the kingship of the Buddha and his roar over the four directions. The four lions (one hidden from view) represent Power, Courage, Pride and Confidence. There is also a non-religious interpretation to the symbol, describing the four lions as the symbol of Ashoka rule in four directions. Just like Buddha, his follower Ashoka wanted to spread the message of peace and friendship. Similarly India after she gained independence wanted to spread the same message. So India adopted the emblem of 4 lions after she gained independence. That is why the emblem is used on indian currencies.
King Ashoka had the lion capital at sarnath carved and its stambha raised some time around 250bce.
