China had not experienced anything like a "Golden Age" before the Song and Tang dynasties because even if the country was prosperous, peasants still revolted for various reasons and the religion was still very much split. However, during the Song and Tang dynasties, the entire surface of the kingdom was prosperous financially, rich from the cultural point of view and peace dominated as well.

The leaders encouraged education, which led to the great achievements. Government was efficient and society was well structured and stable. Efficient government was fueled by an educated ruling class, thanks to the revival of the civil service system. A fixed social structure added stability. Land reform, advances in farming, canals, and increased trade helped the empires economically. Farming and trade flourished. China produced great advances in literature, art, and architecture. China also made many noteworthy inventions during this time period. Chinese culture spread to Japan at this time.
