To some extent it hasn't become obsolete. Today we have a view of the old west and cowboys that is really a fantasy. To give you an example. We think that everyone ran around with guns on their hips. Wrong. When a person came to town they were required to turn their guns over to the sheriff. We think that the saloons had women working in them. Wrong. Women weren't allowed in the saloon. We think of western towns with no rules or laws. Wrong they had strict rules about fighting, getting drunk, and had curfews. Our ideas about the rough and hard cowboy culture comes from paperback novels, short stories, Wild West shows, and early movies.
