Sometimes, the face gets deformed during the process of mummification, if so, they usually put a mask to preserve the face or so the gods can recognize the face of the mummy by the mask. [the mask resembles the face of the dead person]

Because the mummy itself didn't look like much, just a bundle of rags. A mask however can be made beautiful and elegant.
