Why did food have to be rationing in World War 2?

because, lots of merchant shipping and merchant convoys in world war 2 were attacked by German u-boats (submarines) and aircraft, as a result a lot of the ships were sunk and food and other supplies were stretched dangerously thin so rationing books were introduced in England.

Most all food had some rationing. Canning food is a way of preserving it so it would be easier to send overseas. Many places overseas were having food shortages, US farmers answered the call to increase crops, the food was preserved and sent to feed the allies civilians as well as their military. Combat rations were often canned foods, so companys that canned food were pushing their production as hard as they could. The cans used by American civilians when emptied were recycled. Metal was also in great demand.
