The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in an attempt to knock out the U.S. Pacific fleet so the U.S. would not intervine in Japan's attempt to conquer other territories in the Pacific. Also it was in response to the U.S. decision to not send petrol to Japan and freezing Japan's money in American banks.

The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor because they believed that the United States was the greatest threat to their unchecked advance across the Pacific. Specifically because the U.S. cut off their oil reserves. This meant that the Japanese would be unable to make war for long. To allow for a greater advance into the oil-rich Pacific would be suicidal for the United States, who also heavily depended on oil for their navy(and army AND Air Corps). To this end the Japanese launched the surprise attack on Battleship Row to deal as much damage as physically possible to the American Pacific Navy and attempt to force the Americans to sue for peace. The only saving grace for the entire Pacific war effort was that the US carriers Hornet and Yorktown were out patrolling and were not hit by the wave of Imperial fighters over Pearl.
