After the promulgation of that Act in September 1862, the enlistment of Blacks people was legally authorized and more and more of them approached the Union units to be enrolled as Federal soldiers.

Eventually 166 black regiments, for a total of 178,975 men were set up. At the beginning those regiments were designated as "Colored" as an appendage to the relevant regimental title but ultimately all became US Colored Troops.
