Practically all native American men became warriors because each tribe was constantly fighting its neighbours. Each tribe had warrior societies that the men could join, encouraged by tales of the earlier war exploits of the elders.

In many tribes a woman would not marry a man unless he had proved himself to be a successful hunter and a brave warrior; a man who was neither could expect to live a life of poverty and loneliness.

In some tribes (notably on the Plains) some men did not become warriors but instead chose to dress and live the life of a woman, doing woman's work and even marrying another man. These were called berdaches by white Americans and were generally considered to be "holy" and special people by their own tribes.

Some women also became warriors, such as the Crow The Other Magpie and the Cheyenne Buffalo Calf Road Woman - they did not dress as men, however.
