You are thinking of "peace medals" which were given to many of the Plains tribes in a mistaken belief that the natives understood that concept. Some were issued by government agents, by commissioners attempting to ratify peace treaties, by traders who simply wanted to trade something for the furs and hides provided by the tribes and by military officers attempting to keep various bands from going on the war path.
From the point of view of the native Americans, these "peace medals" were simply attractive pendants with no meaning of any kind. They generally had a portrait of the current US president on one side and often a pair of clasped hands on the other.
