  • There were few people who used humor during the Great Depression. Most were extremely poor with little food and having to live in shanty towns. Men would hitch rides on the train (sneak onto them) to get to a destination where they thought they may find work. However, some individuals managed to still have the odd bit of fun trying to lift their spirits by playing music on any instruments they owned or could make. It was not until the race horse 'Sea Biscuit' came along with an oversized; one-eyed blind jockey and the horse was the smallest in the racing circuit and not expected to win. It was this jockey 'Red' and the horse Sea Biscuit that opened up the eyes of the poor and for the first time seeing the winnings of both jockey and horse realized they could overcome their own difficult situations.
