Rations form part of a high energy meal (ideal for a soldier in the field). Many can also be eaten hot or cold.
Also different parts of the rations will do different things to your body. Some cause constipation whilst other parts will act as a laxative. This is particualrly useful as it can minimise unwanted/badly timed toilet breaks.
Ration packs are also easily cooked. There is no messing about with fresh/raw ingredients. Many ration packs are pre cooked and just need reheating (often by boiling in the bag)

Rations where nicknames for the portable meals the soldiers carried. There were C Rations and K Rations. So when an officer says "Preserve your rations" he means use them sparingly so you don't run out of food.

The soldiers carried a cooking pot with them on the march because they had to cook their own food. Unlike our modern armies, they had no mobile kitchens. Each man received his rations but it was his responsibility to prepare them.
Some types of military rations are jungle rations and mountain rations. These two rations are specifically designed to give soldiers enough nutrients to survive in whatever area they are in.
